In 1885, Dakota School of Mines was established as a small mining college. The name was changed to South Dakota School of Mines in 1889 when Dakota Territory was divided. Connolly Hall, named after the late President Joseph P. Connolly, was completed in 1948. Dake Hall and March Hall were completed in 1959. Dake Hall is named after the late Professor Earl D. Dake, Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering; March Hall is named after the late Professor Guy E. March, Professor of Mathematics and Director of Alumni Relations. Palmerton Hall, completed in 1969, is named after Dr. L.R.
